Amortization

The process of paying off a loan through regular payments split between interest and principal.

Amortization is how a loan is paid down over time. Each scheduled payment covers the interest due plus a portion of principal, and the split shifts toward principal as the balance falls.

An amortization schedule lists every payment across the life of the loan, showing exactly how the balance declines and how much total interest you pay.
